A momentary depiction of the invisible.
In Japan, there is the concept of ma. There exists not only space but also time.
This series, which began when Sugita began his research focusing on this “ma,” is also backed by his understanding of Japanese culture cultivated through his calligraphy.
“The INTERVAL” is depicted by momentarily visualizing invisible emotions, unconsciousness, and time as motifs. Some of the paintings in this series are created using a technique that mixes Japanese ink and Western acrylic painting materials. The motif of these works is the fusion of diverse societies that we have not yet been able to see.
By visualizing the invisible, he offers viewers a new perspective that transcends time and space.
目に見えないものたちを刹那的に描く
日本には「間」という概念がある。そこには空間だけでなく時間も存在している。
その「間」に着目し、リサーチを始めたことからスタートしたこのシリーズでは、杉田が書道で培ってきた日本文化への理解も背景には存在する。
目に見えない感情や無意識、時間をモチーフに刹那的に可視化することで描かれる「The INTERVAL」。当シリーズでは、日本の墨と西洋のアクリル画材を混ぜ合わせた技法で表現されるものもある。そこには私たちがまだ見えていない「多様な社会たちの融合」をモチーフとしている。
目に見えないものたちを可視化することで鑑賞者に、時空を越えた新たな視界を提案している。
